Geographic Name Overlaps in the Salish Sea
The Salish Sea has a few duplicate named places, here's a few..
There’s many repeated names for islands and places on the Salish Sea, here’s a few to start with..
Hope Islands
Hope Island (South) Named my Charles Wilkes in 1841, this Hope Island is on the western side of Harstine Island at the entry to Hammersley Inlet. It is a marine State Park and has a Cascadia Marine Trail campsite.
Hope Island (North) also named by Wilkes in 1841 this island is east of Deception Pass by Skagit Island. There’s a ‘primitive’ campsite on the north side.
Hope (the town) located on Fox Island on the Hale Passage side.
Point No Point
The term Point No Point means a false point. As you approach it thinking it’s a significant point, turns out there’s another point just after it.
Point No Point (WA) 1841 Wilkes. The northern tip of Kitsap Peninsula. Known for its 1879 lighthouse, beaches and good fishing.

Hood
Hood Canal - Not really a canal, more of a fjord. Named by Captain Vancouver in 1792
Hood Head - US Coast Survey, 1867. On the western shore of Hood Canal by Hood Canal Bridge.
Hood Point - US Coast Survey, 1867. Four miles south of Seaback on the eastern side of Hood Canal.
Hoodsport - A small town on the very southwest corner of Hood Canal along the Great Bend.
Hood River (Not Salish Sea) on the Columbia River east of Portland, Oregon
Hudson
Hudson Point, (or Point Hudson) named in 1792 by Vancouver. Located a mile south of Point Wilson in Port Townsend.
Hudson Point and Bay - Located a half mile east of Blind Island on Shaw Island
Hudson Cove - On the eastern side of Totten Inlet in south Puget Sound
Possession
Possession - (town) Located on the southeastern end of Whidbey Island
Possession - Point - US Coast Survey, 1867. Southeastern end of Whidbey Island. Native name was ‘gravelly).
Possession Sound - 1792, Vancouver. Between south Whidbey Island and the mainland
Portage
Portage - The narrow isthmus on Vashon Island between Maury and Quartermaster Harbors
Portage Bay - Between Point Francis and the mainland on Bellingham Bay
Portage Canal - The former spit that connected the south end of Indian Island at the County Park to Oak Bay Park on the Olympic Peninsula. Was dredged in 1913 to become Port Townsend or PT Canal.
Portage Island - On the Western side of Bellingham Bay by Lummi Island
